A portable version of Digital Fake Book is now available in zip format from the Digital Fake Book page: http://www.mike-warren.net/dig…..lfakebook/
The idea is to extract the contents to a USB flash drive or portable hard drive so it can be used on more than one computer. There are some things to be aware of when using DFB portable. It is important to keep the file and folder structure intact so DFB can find them. This is the structure from the zip file.
DigitalFakeBookPortable.exe – This is the file you execute
- dfb – This folder contains DigitalFakeBook.exe and all the support and data files.
- web – This folder contains help file
- Audio – This folder is where any linked audio files need to go. Although you can link files from other locations, they will not be found if the drive letter changes. Digital Fake Book knows to look in a subfolder called Audio if it can't find a linked file.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the Bitstream Vera font that is normally installed with Digital Fake Book may not be on the system, in which case Windows will substitute the nearest fixed-width font it can find. This is usually Courier New, which is a much wider font than Bitstream Vera.
If you want, you can download and install the Bitstrem Vera font on all the computers you will be using. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B…..tream_Vera
I have DFB on my laptop and added DFB on a USB drive but I am having trouble getting the songs on to the drive. Should I copy a database to the USB drive. Right now I can use the USB version on my laptop but it must be accessing the data on my laptop because when I try it on another computer the songlist is empty.
I haven't started using it yet. I've loaded charts on my laptop. and can view them nicely on it.
I installed the portable version on the USB drive. I'd like to be able to update the songs on the drive from my laptop. I am playing at a place tomorrow night that uses flat panel monitors for band members. I am the leader and generally bring my laptop with Score Chart software on it and project to the rest of the band and control it with a foot switch. I liked the simplicity of your program and the ability to do 2 pages side by side. You don't have all the bells and whistles of Score Chart but I really don't use them anyway.
They have a house laptop so I was hoping I could just bring a USB drive and run it from that laptop and leave mine home… if not this time maybe the next time I play there.
I used the backup option and then tried the USB drive on a desktop computer… at first no songs… but when I selected the import from DBF option, selected that file and it worked fine. I'm pretty sure I tried that option before from laptop to USB and had a problem. Probably operator error. Anyway, looks great now and I may try it live tonight. I'll try leaving my laptop in my bag at first and bring up the songs on USB through the house laptop. I hope it works because it will save me from having to lug my laptop along and the normal changeout time with the house laptop each time. If it works well this might be a great option at that venue for several other groups that are using all manner of documents… word, pdf, open office, powerpoint, etc… to display charts to the rest of the band. Sometimes we need to change the key also but often everybody just transposes in their head… this program will help to avoid accidental reverting back to the original key on the fly.[quote author=Mike Warren link=topic=7.msg657#msg657 date=1295561256]
Another option is just to backup (options->Backup Song Data) straight to the USB drive and save it in the dfb folder.
